The production was also notably impressive. The super fuzzy, overdriven, crunchy guitars played well with the huge drums, and wailing vocals. This is an album I’d pay to see live, and then promptly be kicked out of the venue for getting too rowdy.

There are some really great records this week. This rocked! At times I got White Stripes vibes, other times Christian Death, and all the way through I felt like I could dance. I love the theme they’ve captured here; they’re name makes them sound like a goth rock band, they look like an 80’s pop band, but the guitars are fuzzy, the drums are huge, and they rip like a rock band.

There’s something about this record that reminds me of mid 0’s alternative; that time when The Killers were kings, Ima Robot had a radio hit with “A is for Action”, and people were obsessed with The Strokes. That particular time in music seemed to be very explorative, lots of bands of varying styles were coming up and finding success. I think that’s why “By Night” reminds me so much of that weird time in music; the record is explorative. The band seemed to have a very clear idea of the sound they wanted to achieve, and I think they really nailed it. It’s goth rock, but it’s not Type O Negative goth rock, it’s rock and roll, with a dark side. Elvis, with black nail polish, or Jimmy Page with vamp teeth.
