Hundred Watt Heart – “Turbulent Times”

Captain Kirk Douglas!

It’s extremely surprising how little attention this record is getting, seeing that The Captain plays guitar for The Roots every night on The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon. The whole record has a very 70’s sound. I feel a lot of Lenny Kravitz coming off these tracks, but I suspect that’s because his voice sounds very similar. I was excited about the release, but when it came time to sit down and listen, I was a little disappointed.

It felt like very dry rock n’ roll, that is, until “Little Friend” which sounded like it could have been a song by The Police in their Zenyatta Mondatta heyday. That turned out to be my pick for the top track, followed by “I Used To Be In The Circus” and the title track, “Turbulent Times.”

The album as a whole was just, fine. To my dismay, it wasn’t anything very special. Unfortunately, I don’t think Cap’s voice is enough to carry through the whole record, and the goal of the songs are tired, and overdone. I fear it will be lost amongst the countless other rock records out there.

It had some stand out moments, but all together, it needed much more.
