Denzel Curry – “ZUU”

Zack de la Rocha is awesome and all, but Denzel Curry could effortlessly fill his shoes if Rage Agains The Machine wanted to do it again without Zack.

Now, to get to the record itself. It wobbles back and forth between being an old school south coast throwback, and a totally modern rap record. Both approaches work independently, but specifically, the jump between “WISH” and “BIRDS” is a little jarring.

This was my only gripe though, and to be honest, I’m not too old to realize that nobody listens to records as a whole anymore.

Juxtaposition simply doesn’t matter nearly as much as it used to. Near the end of the record it takes a turn to a full on New Orleans Bounce with songs like “CAROLMART” and “SHAKE 88”.

As a whole, I loved this record. The top tracks for me had to be “WISH” “CAROLMART” “RICKY” and “AUTOMATIC”. There have been some great releases in the hip hop world lately, and this one totally fits that bill.
